Cyprus is a large, picturesque island in the eastern Mediterranean, popular as a tourist destination. It was under Turkish, then Bristish control until its independence in 1959. The majority of the islanders are Greeks; about a fifth are Turkish. Conflict between the two groups led to the division of island in 1974, into the Greek south and Turkish north.
